Marble Hornets
Marble Hornets is the name given to a YouTube series that started on June 20th in 2009 by Troy Wagner and Joseph DeLage. The series centers around a group of film students, who were previously working on a movie named,” Marble Hornets”. The project was stopped though by director Alex Kralie (Joseph DeLage) because of “unworkable conditions”. The character J (Troy Wagner) convinced Alex to give him the remaining tapes of what remained of the project, and among them he found more than just film material. Then a series of paranormal events begin.
The series features the Slenderman under the name of “The Operator”, and it also includes a Masked-Man known as “Masky” to the fandom, and a Hooded-Man known as “Hoodie” to the fandom.
Marble Hornets was the first web series to be based off the Slenderman. The series is taken from the views of cameras carried by the main characters. The series is organized in Entries, and otherwise as Seasons. Main concepts introduced in the series is the idea of video logging, proxies, and use of the operator symbol. It set a base for much of the mythos and modern myth.
It visually defined the Slenderman (Operator as called in the series to avoid copyright issues), confirming his tall sleek proportions, blank white face, and infamous suit.
The videos introduced a new way to show the Slenderman and spread him through youtube.
This is the series that also began the idea of proxies (though the name is never formally mentioned as it is fan-based). It featured two characters formally recognized as the Masked Man and Hooded Man.
Also, it began the idea of static and technological interference by Slenderman. Being the first video series, when Slender’s presence was near the camera’s would start frizzing, glitching, and distorting.
Further, use of the operator symbol was utilized in this series. Making it an easily remembered symbol to represent Slender.
Moving on, Marble Hornets consists of two accounts, the original Marble Hornets account, and a secondary response account called “totheark”.
Other mythos ideas that started in this series were the ideas that anyone who encounters the Slender man, may be prone to illness.
