slender the arrival- Blue isle studios
The game “Slender the Arrival” was a game developed by Blue Isle Studios and published by Parsec Productions. Made March 26 2013. The game was also in association with the writers of Marble Hornets. After making its appearance on the main site, it then quickly spread to ‘Steam’, another gaming engine, on October 28 2013. It is also currently moving onto console systems like Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2014 with 2 new levels. According to Mark Hadley (Parsec Productions), Slender the Arrival is a continuation or sequel to Slender the Eight Pages. The game has a minor story unlike the other games. According to an interview though, Marble Hornets and Slender the Arrival are two completely separate things.
The game itself is the most proffesional out of the three games, and most likely all other Slender based games. The graphics were great in comparison, the sound quality was also great, and it takes place in a 3D environment. First point of view play, and the game is cut into five sections. (Six if you count the secret level)
I’ll be brief on the gameplay itself. In the game there are five main sections, or chapters. The first labeled “Prologue”, the second “The Eight Pages”, the third “Into the Abyss”, the fourth “Flashback”, and the fifth and final is “The Arrival”.
The game has been confirmed to take the characters point of view as ‘Lauren’. Among people in the game are Lauren, the main playable character, Kate, the person in question who has some connection to the Slenderman, CR, as Kate’s other friend, and of course Slenderman, as himself or the antagonist.
So in the “Prologue”, Lauren is arriving at Kate’s house, only to find it empty and greatly disorganized. Within this level, the player searches for notes and clues, which regard the story and some background information. The Slenderman isn’t seen in this level, or at least rarely. And writing on the wall and in notes hint to the Slenderman. This is also where the player obtains their flashlight. Upon finding a key and opening the locked room, the player then collects a page hinting to the radio tower. Proceeding that, a scream is heard and the player travels outside to investigate.
This is the transition to the next level,” The Eight Pages”, and it now apparently takes place in an area known as Oakside Park. This chapter in many ways mirrors the original eight pages game. However, the map layout differs greatly, and it changes each time it is played. The locations and objects often reposition, disorienting the player. There are 10 interchangeable objects or locations in this level. These include an Oakside Park map, a canoe against a tree, a storage yard, an Oakside Visitor’s center, a portable bathroom, a set up tent, two watch towers, and two vehicles. Some notes and foreshadowing may be found earlier in the level. Sounds and static play a role much like in the original game, triggering after ‘x’ amount of pages are collected. Slenderman still teleports though, and he does move. Rather at the end though, Slenderman catches the player but is then able to break free.
The following level takes place in a mine known as Kullman Mining. Morere notes and clues may be collected as the player travels into the mine. That is until the player is prompted to turn on six generators to activate a lift to escape the mine. However upon activating the generators, the player if faced with another antagonist aside from the Slenderman. They are a white hooded person, sometimes referenced as Kate in a proxy form, and they WILL directly charge at the character. The only way to stop, or rather ‘pause’ this, it to switch the setting on the flashlight to a higher intensity and shine it on the pursuiter. Unlike being caught by Slenderman, this new enemy may catch you a few times before its game over, as it is harder to ward them off. Upon turning on all six generators and rising up the lift, the player is transitioned to part 4.
In part 4 the player exits the mine and is lead out onto a trail where more notes and clues can be found. The trail feeds into a cavern that enters the mountain, again with more notes, and then the player is lead up to a building. Inside the building is a TV, where there is another transition, but within the level. Upon starting the video on the TV, the player now becomes Kate, the one that the game is based around. In this level, the player is prompted to close all the windows and doors to keep Slender out. How many? Eight of course, the magic number. After closing all windows and doors the player is directed to go to their room (of which they spawned in) and in the end the Slenderman comes and Kate is forced out the window. TRANSITION!!!
The final part is part 5, “The Arrival”. In this scene, the player is once again Lauren, and she makes her way up the mountain and closer to the radio tower. With a path leading into a cave, many notes and scribbled writing can be found. Upon exiting the cave the player will find the forest now on fire. In a literally ‘heated’ chase, the Slenderman pursues the player through the burning woods until they reach the final building, the radio tower. Inside the radio tower is a locked door, and of course keys and notes. Unlocking the door leads the player down a series of winding hallways, all scribbled with writing. Inside the player’s flashlight dies. At the end is a corpse and video camera. Playing the video (Actually, its an audio track), and then the player is ultimately trapped, and caught.
Endings vary greatly by version, and what engine it is used on. For example, the steam engine game has a minorly extended ending, as does hardcore mode.
While using ideas from the mythos, Slender the Arrival is ULTIMATELY its own story. With no references to Marble Hornets (despite having the writers contribute) or any other pre known story. It has its own storyline, and the concept of the eight pages feeds into this game. In the end, it is a sequel to the original game, and a successful one. Another thing it uses is the idea of another antagonist aside from Slender. This of course being the enemy from chapter 3, and this enemy is sometimes referenced as a proxy. Slender does move in this game however, which goes against the general idea that Slender can’t move when being looked at. Not to mention his tentacles are also shown to be used, further correlating with the general mythos. Static of course and distortion remain a key relation within the game.
Out of the three games, and of course being the most professional, Slender the Arrival boast superior graphics to the other games, great sound quality, and a short and simple storyline.
