Slender the eight pages- Parsec Productions
The game “Slender” later to be known as “Slender: The Eight Pages” was a game made by Parsec Productions. The creator is known as Mark J. Hadley. It was purely a fan made indie game that took inspiration from the mythos and put it into a game. The game was published and made public June 26th 2012.
The game itself has fairly decent graphics, a lot better than the Slenderman game by Green meteor Team. The objects in the world were all 3D as likewise to the 3D environment. Still nothing professional, but it was well done. The sound quality was also great, and the gameplay short and simple. Graphics made use of all colors, shadows and lighting. Also like the other Slender games, it is a first person point of view game.
Moving on to gameplay, the game did take some elements from Marble Hornets as references, but the gameplay otherwise and objective was independent to the mythos.
The game starts much like Slenderman, in that there is a black screen with audio, however intro credits are used. Audio suggests the player is walking, and then interacts with the fence, likely climbing over it, into the game world where the gameplay takes place.
There are about eleven important and notary landmarks in the game. Those include the fence, the large/scary tree, the silo, the truck and the small shed next to it, the single tanker truck, the tunnel, the cutted woods/pillars, the cross brick walls, the group of three large rocks, the house/bathroom/building, and the oil tanks.
The fence like all the other games outlines the end of the gameplay world. All other objects Serve as spawn points for the ‘eight pages’. Other references could be the silo, building, and tunnel, as these are all common objects within the Marble Hornets series.
The object of the game is to collect the ‘eight pages’ which are placed around the 10 locations. The pages as far as I have researched are of their own relevance to the game. In the game though, Slender will persistently chase you. The player is equipped with a flashlight as their source of light, which can and will eventually run out of battery. If you look at the Slenderman for too long, or he catches you, the game ends. There is a grace period in the beginning of the game where the player is free to roam unharmed, but the period ends once the first page is collected, or a timer ends. Proceeding with collecting the first page, a thumping or stomping noise plays through the rest of the game. Also once three pages are collected, another wind-like noise plays. After five pages another unnerving ringing soundtrack is added, all of which play through the rest of the game. Upon collecting the eight page, everything stops, and there is a short grace period, before the player is caught by Slender regardless.
The game includes four playable modes, each unlocked after beating the previous, and they include Normal mode, Daytime mode, 20 Dollars Mode, and Marble Hornets Mode. Normal mode is essentially at night, with fog and cricket sounds, the basic. Daytime takes place in the day without any fog. No flashlight needed and daytime sounds play such as birds chirping. 20 Dollars is a unique mode that references the 20 Dollars meme, as when the player sees Slender the soundtrack plays. And Marble Hornets mode is much like normal, just somewhat harder, static constantly borders the screen, and the player has a lantern and glow stick instead of a flashlight.
So while in regards to the objects in the game there are subtle references to Marble hornets, the game is fairly independent to the mythos.
Likewise to Marble Hornets and other series, whenever Slender is near there is recurring static, one of Slenderman’s key warnings for the player.
The game uses multiple outlets such as Marble Hornets and the 20 dollar meme so that it could gain popularity. It spread fairly well as a common horror game and primarily spread on playthroughs on Youtube. This is the game that really introduced Slender to the gamers world, spreading him as another outlet.
This also began the references to the eight pages. Despite being a game, it surprisingly added to the stories and mythos themselves. The eight pages became a symbol for Slenderman, and a base for most other games regarding Slender to come.
