Slenderman- Green meteor team
Alright, so the game “Slenderman” made by Green Meteor Team came out in October of 2011, being one of the, if not first, Slenderman oriented games. It was made in response to a horror game contest by 64digits. The creator of the game is Zachary Helm, an Indie game developer, credited in making the first Slenderman
game, aka, THIS game.
The game itself isn’t very professional, and fairly generic. The game is set in a 3D world, but the graphics are nothing praisable, all of which were made of 2D
sheets and walls. Even the enemies were 2D, which again looked odd in a 3D world. The pictures also looked amateurly drawn, and its in black and white and
red. Alright, but aside from the graphics not, the audio however WAS fairly well done.
Moving on to the gameplay itself, it is extremely important to note that the game was VERY Marble Hornets oriented. It starts with the main character being dropped on a road in the game world. Audio noises suggest that the characters car is unable to start, in which it is then seen that the characters car is pulled off to the side. There are about 4 important objects to note in the game world. Those are the road (upon which you start), a house, a silo, and the fence.
The road is just a means of being a spawn point, and giving the player a small sense of direction. The house is where the majority of the gameplay takes place, it
appears to be birthday themed. The silo is a subsection for the gameplay. And the fence simply outlines the world of gameplay. Otherwise, there are various
scattered trees and flowers, etc.
So, as the game goes, you enter into the house and find tapes, entering them into a VCR TV where you receive directions for what to do next, and unlocking the next area of the house. After the first tape “Watching You”, proxies (or proxy since it’s one sprite of Masky) begin to appear and attack you in the game, along with
Slenderman. Shortly after you receive a compass that leads you around the game via direction “north”. Collecting another tape named “Go” that directs you to go
to the silo. Upon reaching the silo, there is a crow of some sort holding a key that you chase for awhile. Upon obtaining the key you enter the locked room
where there is a handgun and the third and final tape “Alone”. Then you are directed to simply go around shooting proxies and Slenderman sprites until the
game ends. Then the game ends.
Now, moving on the the relevance of the game. Again, it is VERY Marble Hornets oriented. The many direct references are the use of the tapes, the masked enemy, and the Silo. In the series Marble Hornets, tapes are used to tell the story, Masky is the fan given name to the character who wears a white mask, and the
silo is a reoccuring location in the series.
In other relations to Slenderman himself, during gameplay there is recurring static which is present when Slender is near, supporting Marble Hornets again, but also many other references. Otherwise in relation to the characteristics and stories of Slender, it has been shown time and time again that guns don’t work on
Slender, making the ending a bit questionable.
In relation to the other games, it has a little more to it than Slender the Eight pages as far as objectives, but not nearly as intricate as Slender the Arrival,
and out of the three it has THE WORST graphics. Also, the only scary thing about it is the sounds, other than that the fear element is taken out because you
simply respawn and CONTINUE when caught. Whereas in the other games you DIE when caught. Game over. (Its also hard to be scared of unproffesional graphics...) What makes it even LESS scary, is that you KILL Slender. The ending is resolute! Not exactly the best horror game, no...
The game gave a small, little known start for Slender into the world of gaming. Not very much though, however it did spread across the 64digits contest and into
sources like Slenderia (The Slender Encyclopedia).
